IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Hajime Hinata
Age: 18
Canon: Dangan Ronpa (Super Dangan Ronpa 2)
Canon Point: End of Chapter 2
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Orientation: Although Hinata has thought some questionable things about other male characters (i.e. thinking Kuzuryuu's face is cute and admiring Nidai's body), it's probably safe to say that he's heterosexual. In the Dangan Island side game, he can only date the female characters (with the exception of Peko, since she already has a crush on someone), and he never displays any romantic interest in any of the male characters. He also has a very negative reaction to Hanamura, a boy, hugging him in Chapter 1.
History: Here!
Appearance: Here!
Personality:
One of the first things that one may notice about Hinata is his cynicism. He spends the majority of the prologue of the game being incredibly suspicious about their entire situation while everyone else is content to enjoy their spontaneous island field trip, and later when Hinata's suspicions are confirmed, he also becomes wary of everyone else. He has no doubt that someone among them would kill another in order to escape the island, and he can't even trust himself to not be driven to kill someone. Hinata also tends to be rather blunt and isn't even afraid to express his outright apathy to others. There are countless examples of this; for instance, when Nidai goes on about poultry during the group's first breakfast together, Hinata outright tells him that he doesn't care about that right now. Another instance is when Gundam proclaims that "God favors Gundam Tanaka alone!" after finding his missing Devildog Earring, Hinata responds with, "That's great." This type of attitude that he displays rather often can make him appear to be cold-hearted, however Hinata is nowhere near that.

Although he can clearly be snippy at times, especially during stressful situations (aka the vast majority of the game), he does genuinely care for every single one of the students and gradually opens up to the idea of believing in them. Before the party in Chapter 1, he encourages Tsumiki to not worry about getting in anyone's way and to try to enjoy herself. Later in Chapter 2, he's happy for her when she tells him that Nanami taught her how to play a video game and seems to be having a lot of fun with it. There is even further evidence of Hinata's softer side in various characters' free time events; using Tsumiki as an example again, when she gets upset and thinks that everyone hates her during her final free time event, Hinata comforts her and tells her that no one hates her and not to worry so much about what other people think. Also in Owari's fourth free time event, Hinata discovers that she has a fear of ghosts, which causes her to be extremely embarrassed and tells him not to tell anyone. She's still hung up on it during the final free time event and insists that she's not weak, but Hinata teaches her there's nothing shameful about being weak and that a truly strong person would try to overcome their weaknesses rather than refuse to acknowledge them. The fact that he even goes out of his way to spend time with his classmates and tries to help them with their insecurities rather than just holing himself up in his cottage like he had originally wanted to do shows what a kind-hearted person Hinata really is.

Naturally, as the protagonist of the game, Hinata seems to gradually establish himself as the leader of the group. Right after the death of their former leader, Togami, Hinata is pressed with the task to check under the tablecloth to find the source of the blood that Owari was smelling. He even has a big influence on the trials, always being the one to point out contradictions and successfully disproving arguments against his own claims, which causes the trials to move in his favor. He is also very logical and always thinks things through before speaking up, never blurting out any baseless accusations that he can't back up, which is what helps them eventually figure out who the culprit is. While he does get stumped at times and sometimes need assistance from others to arrive to the right conclusion, Hinata never fails to have just the evidence he needs to get the job done. He proves to be especially capable in Chapter 3's trial, where everyone's lives literally depend on Hinata's deduction abilities because he was the sole witness to video of "Mioda" preparing to hang herself, therefore he is the only one who can figure out the discrepencies between the video and the actual crime scene, which of course he does. As the game progresses, it also becomes clear that the other students start to trust him more, with just one exception. In Chapter 4, Souda starts to suspect Hinata of being the traitor since no one really knows anything about him and distances himself from him because of this, which Hinata doesn't take too well since he wants to be trusted. However, when Souda suggests to the others that Hinata may be dangerous, they all jump to Hinata's defense and say that there's no way that he could be the traitor. And of course, when it's proven later in the chapter that it's not possible for Hinata to be the traitor because he's just an ordinary high school student, there's no longer any room to doubt him, making him a suitable leader figure.

It's also very important to note just how much Hinata idolizes Hope's Peak Academy. Getting into Hope's Peak has always been his lifelong dream and he even claims that he practically worships the school. Since he doesn't actually have a SHSL talent, he goes to extraordinary lengths to just be able to attend the school of his dreams; the reserve course is said to be ridiculously expensive due to the fact that Hope's Peak is desperate for funding, but he manages to convince his parents to pay the fees anyway. But even after getting into Hope's Peak, it doesn't change the fact that Hinata has no special talents whatsoever, which clearly still eats away at him because when he is chosen to be the subject of the Hope Cultivation Project, in which Hinata would be transformed into a completely different person with a multitude of talents and be granted the title SHSL Hope, he willingly goes along with the experiment. It's very likely that Hinata was told the risks of the experiment, including the fact that he would lose his old self entirely, but that doesn't stop him from going through with it anyway. All Hinata wants is to be a special, talented person and not live the life of a boring, ordinary person. Although by the end of the game, he realizes that all along, he didn't really want to be talented; he just wanted to be proud of himself. Hinata is finally able to do that after having finally overcome his insecurities and stopped the Junko virus from spreading around the world.

Finally, Hinata's relationship with Komaeda is probably worth mentioning here as well, since it can be rather ambiguous. At first they get along pretty well and even though Hinata thinks that Komaeda comes across as "wishy washy," he still seems pretty eager to consider him as a friend. After all, when Hinata passed out on the beach at the beginning of the game, Komaeda was the only one who stayed with him to make sure he was okay and accompanied Hinata as he went around the island and introduced himself to everyone else after recovering. However, after Komaeda's failed murder plot is revealed in Chapter 1's trial and he shows his true colors, Hinata is completely repulsed by his behavior and even encourages Owari to punch him after he insists that he and Hinata are alike. Of course, he treats Komaeda completely differently ever since that trial, constantly being pissed off with him and cooperating with him as little as possible during murder investigations. However, if Komaeda's first free time event is completed before the end of Chapter 1, Hinata can still ask Komaeda to hang out with him whenever possible and even go through the usual ritual of giving a present after spending some time together. In Komaeda's fourth free time event, Hinata tells him that he spends time with him because he doesn't understand him, and so he's afraid of leaving Komaeda alone. Although he slowly begins to understand Komaeda more as he spends more time with him, Hinata still doesn't think that Komaeda's actions should be excused and while he probably wouldn't ever call Komaeda his friend, he still acknowledges him on a level that none of the other students do since most of them want absolutely nothing to do with Komaeda. He also shows concern for Komaeda when he's nearly killed by the despair fever in Chapter 3, and is even horrified by his death in Chapter 5, so it's clear that he does care about Komaeda on some level despite everything that he's done.

Abilities: Nope, no special abilities whatsoever.
