One of the first things that one may notice about Hinata is his cynicism. He spends the majority of the prologue of the game being incredibly suspicious about their entire situation while everyone else is content to enjoy their spontaneous island field trip, and later when Hinata's suspicions are confirmed, he also becomes wary of everyone else. He has no doubt that someone among them would kill another in order to escape the island, and he can't even trust himself to not be driven to kill someone. Hinata also tends to be rather blunt and isn't even afraid to express his outright apathy to others. There are countless examples of this; for instance, when Nidai goes on about poultry during the group's first breakfast together, Hinata outright tells him that he doesn't care about that right now. Another instance is when Gundam proclaims that "God favors Gundam Tanaka alone!" after finding his missing Devildog Earring, Hinata responds with, "That's great." This type of attitude that he displays rather often can make him appear to be cold-hearted, however Hinata is nowhere near that.

Although he can clearly be snippy at times, especially during stressful situations (aka the vast majority of the game), he does genuinely care for every single one of the students and gradually opens up to the idea of believing in them. Before the party in Chapter 1, he encourages Tsumiki to not worry about getting in anyone's way and to try to enjoy herself. Later in Chapter 2, he's happy for her when she tells him that Nanami taught her how to play a video game and seems to be having a lot of fun with it. There is even further evidence of Hinata's softer side in various characters' free time events; using Tsumiki as an example again, when she gets upset and thinks that everyone hates her during her final free time event, Hinata comforts her and tells her that no one hates her and not to worry so much about what other people think. Also in Owari's fourth free time event, Hinata discovers that she has a fear of ghosts, which causes her to be extremely embarrassed and tells him not to tell anyone. She's still hung up on it during the final free time event and insists that she's not weak, but Hinata teaches her there's nothing shameful about being weak and that a truly strong person would try to overcome their weaknesses rather than refuse to acknowledge them. The fact that he even goes out of his way to spend time with his classmates and tries to help them with their insecurities rather than just holing himself up in his cottage like he had originally wanted to do shows what a kind-hearted person Hinata really is.

Naturally, as the protagonist of the game, Hinata seems to gradually establish himself as the leader of the group. Right after the death of their former leader, Togami, Hinata is pressed with the task to check under the tablecloth to find the source of the blood that Owari was smelling. He even has a big influence on the trials, always being the one to point out contradictions and successfully disproving arguments against his own claims, which causes the trials to move in his favor. He is also very logical and always thinks things through before speaking up, never blurting out any baseless accusations that he can't back up, which is what helps them eventually figure out who the culprit is. While he does get stumped at times and sometimes need assistance from others to arrive to the right conclusion, Hinata never fails to have just the evidence he needs to get the job done. He proves to be especially capable in Chapter 3's trial, where everyone's lives literally depend on Hinata's deduction abilities because he was the sole witness to video of "Mioda" preparing to hang herself, therefore he is the only one who can figure out the discrepencies between the video and the actual crime scene, which of course he does. As the game progresses, it also becomes clear that the other students start to trust him more, with just one exception. In Chapter 4, Souda starts to suspect Hinata of being the traitor since no one really knows anything about him and distances himself from him because of this, which Hinata doesn't take too well since he wants to be trusted. However, when Souda suggests to the others that Hinata may be dangerous, they all jump to Hinata's defense and say that there's no way that he could be the traitor. And of course, when it's proven later in the chapter that it's not possible for Hinata to be the traitor because he's just an ordinary high school student, there's no longer any room to doubt him, making him a suitable leader figure.

It's also very important to note just how much Hinata idolizes Hope's Peak Academy. Getting into Hope's Peak has always been his lifelong dream and he even claims that he practically worships the school. Since he doesn't actually have a SHSL talent, he goes to extraordinary lengths to just be able to attend the school of his dreams; the reserve course is said to be ridiculously expensive due to the fact that Hope's Peak is desperate for funding, but he manages to convince his parents to pay the fees anyway. However, supplementary materials state that Hinata was bullied relentlessly in Hope's Peak because of his lack of talent and ended up on the verge of failing out of the school, which resulted in him being chosen as the subject of the Hope Cultivation Project. It's very likely that Hinata was told the risks of the experiment, including the fact that he would lose his old self entirely, but that doesn't stop him from going through with it anyway. All Hinata wants is to be a special, talented person and not live the life of a boring, ordinary person. Although by the end of the game, he realizes that all along, he didn't really want to be talented; he just wanted to be proud of himself. Hinata is finally able to do that after having finally overcome his insecurities and stopped the Junko virus from spreading around the world.

While Hinata's decision to become Izuru Kamukura certainly proved to not be a very smart one in the end, at the time he felt like it was the only option he had. He was on the verge of failing out of school and was being bullied by other students for being such a boring, run-of-the-mill, and talentless person. There is some in-game evidence supporting the notion that he was bullied -- during Chapter 3, Hinata has a dream about sitting in a classroom where a bunch of faceless students make remarks about how average he is, which makes him visibly distressed. Operating under the assumption that this dream is actually a repressed memory, which is very likely judging by Hinata's strong reaction to it, it is not difficult to imagine that the bullying would affect Hinata's academic performance so drastically. Also, being kicked out of Hope's Peak Academy for his poor grades would result in disappointing his parents as well as wasting their money; reserve course students are required to pay a very expensive tuition fee to gain entrance into the school. He could never face his parents or forgive himself if that were to happen, so being offered the opportunity to become a multiltalented person who would also become the symbol of hope was like a blessing to him. He couldn't possibly turn down an offer that would only come once in a lifetime, especially with how bleak his future was looking at the time.

As Kamukura, Hinata's memories and personality were repressed, so he essentially did become a completely different person. We only get a brief glimpse of what Kamukura's personality is like in Chapter 0, but there are some conclusions that can be made about him based on this scene. First of all, he seems to hold himself in an extremely high regard, often referring to himself as being "someone so loved by talent" and lamenting about how boring everything is to him. He is excited by unpredictability and irregularity, but because of his exceptional critical thinking and analytical skills, he can easily figure out the pattern or reason for this, which then results in him being bored again. Kamukura also possesses very good intuition, which has allowed him to understand Komaeda's true nature before the boy had even introduced himself. He also belittles Komaeda's talent by saying that he possesses good luck as well and calling it a boring talent. Hell, he even goes as far as saying that Komaeda himself is a boring person with boring thoughts and that there would be no point in the two of them ever meeting again. Also, when Komaeda asks him why he was here and how he got himself into this position, Kamukura completely ignores the question in favor of rambling on about how boring the world is. From what we can see, Kamukura's personality is pretty much the total opposite of Hinata's -- Hinata is a friendly, caring person who is unsure of his abilities, while Kamukura is a cold, pretentious douchebag who thinks he's hot shit.

After instigating the World's Most Despair-inducing Incident, Kamukura's existence as well as information about the Hope Cultivation Project was hidden from the public to prevent fallout occuring from the news of their so-called symbol of hope single-handedly slaying the majority of the student council. Even Kirigiri, the SHSL Detective, had no idea what the Junko AI was talking about when she brought it up. Dangan Ronpa Zero seems to imply that Kamukura was being held in an unknown location before being transported over to the Jabberwock Islands, so because of this, it's highly unlikely that he was an active member of SHSL Despair during this time. Given the chaos that was brought about by Kamukura's crime, he was likely placed under heavy surveillance, and he was also being hunted down by SHSL Secret Agent Yuuto Kamishiro, so any activity of his probably would have been detected by Kamishiro. Besides, why even bother trying to do anything when his true goal could not be realized until after the fall of SHSL Despair?

Kamukura's reasoning for bringing the Junko virus into the New World Program is never explicitly stated, but it can be deduced with the information provided in Chapter 0 and the end of the game. The most likely reason for doing this is because he wanted to rid the world of all the boring, talentless people by having them be taken over by the Junko AI, himself included. After all, the only way the Junko AI could possess the students' bodies is if all of them are killed inside the program. Given the obsessive mindset that SHSL Despair members develop about Junko, whether they love her or hate her, it's not unreasonable that Kamukura would go to such lengths to fulfill his vision of a better world. The following quote also provides some important insight into his reasoning, taken from [tumblr.com profile] birdmanronpa's translation:

………….. such boring people will never leave anything worthwhile on this world … not a mote … so … I’ve learned from my teachers that some sort of “selection” must occur.

Despite the influence that Junko had on him, he still kept his teachings from the Hope Cultivation Project staff in mind when he implemented his plan. It was drilled into his head that he had to bring hope to the world, and in his mind, the only possible way he could bring hope to a now hopeless world is to start it over with talented people being in charge instead. As we all know, Junko is the most talented individual on the planet other than Kamukura himself, so surely with her lovely persona inside of everyone, everything will be so much better! Even if he himself could not live in the new world, he could rest easy knowing that he fulfilled the duty given to him by Hope's Peak. It's likely that he also acknowledged the possibility of his plan failing and things turning out the way they did in canon, which still does not matter to him because either way, he knew that his role in the world was coming to an end and whatever came next would be up to Hinata to deal with.

Finally, Hinata's relationship with Komaeda is probably worth mentioning here as well, since it can be rather ambiguous. At first they get along pretty well and even though Hinata thinks that Komaeda comes across as "wishy washy," he still seems pretty eager to consider him as a friend. After all, when Hinata passed out on the beach at the beginning of the game, Komaeda was the only one who stayed with him to make sure he was okay and accompanied Hinata as he went around the island and introduced himself to everyone else after recovering. However, after Komaeda's failed murder plot is revealed in Chapter 1's trial and he shows his true colors, Hinata is completely repulsed by his behavior and even encourages Owari to punch him after he insists that he and Hinata are alike. Of course, he treats Komaeda completely differently ever since that trial, constantly being pissed off with him and cooperating with him as little as possible during murder investigations. However, if Komaeda's first free time event is completed before the end of Chapter 1, Hinata can still ask Komaeda to hang out with him whenever possible and even go through the usual ritual of giving a present after spending some time together. In Komaeda's fourth free time event, Hinata tells him that he spends time with him because he doesn't understand him, and so he's afraid of leaving Komaeda alone. Although he slowly begins to understand Komaeda more as he spends more time with him, Hinata still doesn't think that Komaeda's actions should be excused and while he probably wouldn't ever call Komaeda his friend, he still acknowledges him on a level that none of the other students do since most of them want absolutely nothing to do with Komaeda. He also shows concern for Komaeda when he's nearly killed by the despair fever in Chapter 3, and is even horrified by his death in Chapter 5, so it's clear that he does care about Komaeda on some level despite everything that he's done. However, after finding out what his true motive was, Hinata is clearly disgusted by it and if Komaeda ever shows up in Route, they will probably have the most awkward relationship ever. Even more awkward than it already was.

Pokémon Information
Affiliation: Trainer
Starter: I think that an Eevee would be the perfect starter for him because like how Hinata is just an average kid with no special talents and doesn't really stand out at all, Eevee is a Normal type with a pretty mediocre moveset, but both have the opportunity to become something much more amazing. Hinata had originally chosen to "evolve" into Izuru Kamukura, but now that the New World Program has essentially undone that and he knows what the awful consequences that decision led to, he can choose a new path and see what sort of "evolution" he ends up with this time.
